The TEFL Academy proudly provides another world first to the TEFL industry. Introducing our new Level 5 Certificate in Observed Teaching Practice (TEFL) course, regulated by Ofqual (UK government department) and awarded by Qualifi. This course will give you a CELTA/Trinity CertTESOL equivalent qualification (when combined with our Combined or online-only Level 5 TEFL Diploma).
Ninety percent of jobs do not ask for a CELTA/Trinity CertTESOL qualification, so our students completing our main Level 5 TEFL course usually find employment within 4-6 weeks of course completion. Our unique pathway allows you to get into the classroom faster and without the high up-front cost associated with the CELTA/Trinity CertTESOL courses. Those jobs that do specify these qualifications are mostly very well paid jobs in the Middle East, or jobs in native-English speaking countries, such as Australia, the UK or the USA (that usually prefer experience in addition to a TEFL qualification).
The course has been designed for new and inexperienced teachers who have already completed a Level 5 TEFL qualification and have started teaching. It offers the convenience of an online course with the benefit of 6 hours of observed, assessed teaching practice (the same as the CELTA/Trinity CertTESOL courses).
To complete the course successfully you are required to complete and pass 13 reflection and self-evaluation tasks. The course has a continual professional development (CPD) focus. You will have the opportunity to observe other teachers in different classes, covering a range of skills as well as grammar and vocabulary. Our targeted approach to observations means that you will analyse specific elements of their teaching style and methodology, before putting it into practice yourself, to help you develop a style that works for you.
You will record yourself in the classroom (online or face-to-face) for six lessons. You will submit these recordings along with your completed tasks. You will receive feedback on your teaching and self-reflection tasks from our experienced TEFL trainers. When you submit your teaching practice videos, we ask you to reflect on the lesson. This is your opportunity to tell us what you think was good about the lesson, and why it was good, and what didn’t go as expected and how you would change it if you did that lesson again. This is essential as a new teacher, but also something that you will use throughout your teaching career.
The course can be studied at your own pace (usually within 3 months), but you are given 2 years access to the course. This gives you plenty of time to find employment and means the course can be purchased at the same time as your main level 5 course. You should start the course after you have completed your main Level 5 TEFL qualification and have started teaching. Our students can find TEFL jobs on our jobs board, external job boards, our volunteer and paid internships or online teaching.
After successful completion of the course, you’ll receive an internationally recognised Level 5 Certificate in Observed Teaching Practice. You will then have teaching experience and a CELTA/Trinity CertTESOL equivalent qualification, making you extremely employable, and an ideal candidate for almost any TEFL job!

Options explained
With so much choice and such a vast amount of information available on the internet, it can be challenging to understand which qualification you really need.
The CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL and our own Level 5 TEFL course all lead to regulated Level 5 qualifications. The CELTA is offered by Cambridge University and the Trinity CertTESOL by Trinity College London. The main difference between them and our Level 5 TEFL qualification is that they include observed teaching practice.
Although 90% of employers do not ask for a CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL, some offering very well paid jobs in the Middle-East or those based in native-English speaking countries, such as Australia, the UK or the USA, may ask for these qualifications as they are highly respected in the industry.
If you wish to make TEFL your long-term career or apply for the roles mentioned above, then you can choose to complete our Observed Teaching Practice course. Once completed you will have teaching experience and a CELTA or TrinityCertTESOL equivalent qualification, making you highly employable.

Observed Teaching Practice FAQ
Both are Level 5 TEFL qualifications, the CELTA offered by Cambridge University and the Trinity CertTESOL by Trinity College London. The main difference between them and our Level 5 TEFL qualification is that they include observed teaching practice. Although 90% of employers do not ask for these qualifications, some offering very well paid jobs in the Middle East or those based in native-English speaking countries, such as Australia, the UK or the USA, may ask for these qualifications as they are highly respected in the industry.

These employers usually offer very well paid jobs in the Middle East or can often be based in native-English speaking countries, such as Australia, the UK or the USA.
Completing a Level 5 TEFL qualification with us will give you the qualification you need to apply for 90% of TEFL jobs without the high up-front cost or lack of flexibility of the CELTA or TrinityCertTESOL courses. You can get into the classroom faster, allowing you to decide whether TEFL is the right career path for you. If you only want to teach for a few years, online-only, whilst travelling, and not in a Native-English speaking country, then there is no real need to ever complete a CELTA or TrinityCertTESOL equivalent qualification. If, however, you decide that TEFL could be a long-term career, then you can choose to complete our Observed Teaching Practice course. Once completed you will have teaching experience and a CELTA or TrinityCertTESOL equivalent qualification, allowing you to apply for jobs that ask for these qualifications and making you highly employable.
Employers will only accept an Observed Teaching Practice course as a CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL equivalent qualification if it sits on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications. This is because regulated qualifications ensure that the trainers observing the lessons and providing feedback are suitably qualified.
You can find our qualification on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications here.
This course has been designed as a continuous professional development course for teachers who have already started work, therefore it is up to the learner to ensure they are in either volunteer or paid employment when they start the course. You can be teaching face-face-face in a classroom or online. Once you have completed your main qualification you can find work on our jobs board, external job boards, our volunteer and paid internships or online teaching. There is a unit dedicated to finding employment in our main Level 5 TEFL Diploma course.
For classroom teaching you can use any smartphone (we discuss how to set up your phone within the course) to record your lessons. For online teaching there are several ways to record your lessons on your computer device, which are also discussed within the course.
Most schools and online ESL/EFL providers will allow you to observe your fellow teachers in order to complete your qualification. If this is not possible we will provide videos for you to observe instead.
The course is regulated by Ofqual (UK government department) and awarded by Qualifi, a UK government-recognised awarding body. You can find our qualification on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications here.
The TEFL Academy is fully accredited by Qualifi an Ofqual (The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation, a UK government department) regulated awarding body. Qualifi have robust quality assurance systems and procedures in place which all course providers must successfully pass in order to be accredited under the scheme.
Potential TEFL course students should remember that their prospective employers are likely to be based outside South Africa. This means that accreditation bodies based solely in South Africa may not be recognised by employers abroad. This is why The TEFL Academy has chosen Qualifi, as they offer international accreditation for training course providers.
You can find out more about Qualifi on their website: https://qualifi.net
Accreditation Partners
The TEFL Academy was the world’s first TEFL course provider to receive official recognition from government regulated awarding bodies in both the USA and UK. This means when you graduate you’ll hold a globally recognised Level 3 (120hr) Certificate or Level 5 (168hr) Diploma, meaning you can find work anywhere and apply for jobs immediately.
