English teaching jobs in Vietnam
The tropical climate, cheap living costs, rich culture and history are just some of the reasons ESL teachers seek TEFL jobs in Vietnam. The country is famed for its beautiful beaches, picturesque rice fields and bustling markets in the larger cities, making it an ideal destination for TEFL teachers to experience living in Asia.
The capital of Hanoi is likely to be the easiest location to find TEFL jobs in Vietnam and offers teachers the opportunity to experience a rapidly evolving city that is working hard to make up for lost time due to the past war. Offering eclectic markets selling everything from imitation products to traditional foods, hectic traffic and Buddhist temples, the influences of previous Chinese and French occupations are also clearly visible. Night owls should note that there is a midnight curfew in the city, so it is not the destination for all-night partying.
Other large cities such as Saigon and Ho Chi Minh city are also excellent places to find TEFL jobs in Vietnam, although there are also increasing opportunities in the growing coastal areas and occasionally in more rural locations. Popular activities for tourists and those working in TEFL jobs in Vietnam include cycling through the vast areas of wet rice paddies, exploring the Cu Chi tunnels used by soldiers in the Vietnam war and sampling unique food such as Bahn Mi, a fusion of traditional Vietnamese ingredients encased in French-style bread.
Teaching Opportunities in Vietnam
TEFL jobs in Vietnam are usually fairly easy to come by due to the increased opportunities that English language skills bring in terms of employment for the Vietnamese people. TEFL teachers are required to teach at various levels for both adults and children throughout the country.
Private language schools are the main source of TEFL jobs in Vietnam and usually provide a liveable salary and opportunities for professional development. They do, however, sometimes require ESL teachers to work weekends, as well as during the week. More lucrative wages and bonuses such as travel and housing allowances are often found in international schools serving expats and wealthy Vietnamese children. These jobs require more experience as well as a TEFL qualification and university degree.
Private tutoring is another option for TEFL teachers, however this provides less security, with work tending to drop off during holiday periods such as Chinese New Year. It may also be harder for self-employed ESL teachers to get a working visa, but this type of work is an excellent way to earn a little extra on the side whilst working at an academy.
Short-term TEFL jobs in Vietnam can often be found in kindergartens and involve simple tasks such as teaching the alphabet. As such, a TEFL certificate is not always necessary for these positions, although it is an advantage. In general, TEFL jobs in Vietnam can provide teachers with a salary ranging from the equivalent of £500 to £1200 per month, depending on experience and location. Due to the low cost of food and rent, many ESL teachers find that this allows them to live comfortably as well as save some money whilst working in Vietnam.
