United Kingdom Job Listings
TEFL jobs in the UK are a different way to put your EFL skills into practice whilst enjoying the stability and comfort of familiar surroundings. Whilst for first-time ESL teachers, a position within a UK-based language academy can offer a boost in confidence needed to make the next step abroad, for tried-and-tested ESL teachers it can be the conclusion of a worldwide tour.
As such a multicultural and diverse country, the United Kingdom attracts students from all around the world. Some come for short periods of time to experience summer camps, week-long courses, weekend activity groups and more, all hoping that immersion into the language will boost the grammar and vocabulary which they have studied in their home nations. Others come for much longer periods, again to study and immerse themselves in the language and culture before returning to their own nation. Still more, however, have already made the move to the country and are hoping to grasp the language for professional or day-to-day reasons.
There is therefore an abundance of language academies in the United Kingdom. Most of these are private and their quality can vary. There are also several courses led by reputable universities, governing bodies and local councils.
Work within the private academies certainly varies. The majority of these academies will only hire ESL teachers in possession of a degree and a strong EFL qualification. Contracts may range from the short term to the academic year. Salaries may also differ, though it is unlikely you will be offered more than £1,400 per month. There are usually jobs advertised online all year round.
For those who are unsure about the advantages and disadvantages of TEFL jobs in the UK, finding a position at one of the many summer camps located around the country is a great way to test the water. Apart from giving you an insight into the EFL experience on home ground, it can also be one of the best ways to secure a year-round contract as, at the end of the camp, many academies will opt to take on their summer staff. Summer camp positions are in high demand, so it is best to begin your search for them from April onwards.
Though perhaps lacking some of the romance and mystery of teaching abroad, TEFL jobs in the UK offer the unique opportunity to teach students from many different cultures at the same time. It can be an excellent way to hone ESL skills while being provided with essential support from experienced faculty members.
For advice about the reputability of language academies in the UK you should check ESL websites and forums to see if your prospective placement is deemed to be reliable, well run and professional. The high demand for EFL schools has meant that there are some below-par organisations. Finding work with a council, university or government-based scheme may mean a more secure work environment with a higher salary.
