The Swiss Alps are one of the most popular destinations in Europe for winter sports, but also offer fantastic hiking and mountain biking in the summer. For city slickers, the capital of Bern has a stunning old town, however other large cities such as Geneva, the centre for arts and culture, Zurich, a major business zone with pumping nightlife, and Bellinzona, renowned for itsmedieval castles, should also be on any visitor’s list and are good places to start the search for TEFL jobs in Switzerland.
A major draw for most foreigners, Swiss chocolate is famous throughout the world. In fact, the advent of solid milk chocolate itself is attributable to the country, along with culinary techniques such as tempering.Although good chocolate alone may not be reason to look for TEFL jobs in Switzerland, if you are a food enthusiast there is plenty more to draw you to the country.Cheese is also an important part of the cuisine, with the popular Gruyère and Emmental heralding from the valleys of the same names.Cheese-based dishes such as fondue and raclette are common, particularly in mountain regions.
Due to the high level of English spoken in Switzerland, there are less TEFL jobs in Switzerland than in other parts of Europe.Private language academies serving mainly the business community are one option, however these are generally the lowest paying and may be the most demanding in terms of time due to the need to teach outside of normal business hours.EFL/ESL teachers may be required to teach up to 40 hours per week, often early in the morning, during lunch hours or in the evenings, with split shifts common and a changing timetable to suit the client likely.

ESL tuition is often combined with the ‘finishing’ part of the course in these institutions and due to the high fees paid by students, wages are usually higher and classroom facilities are excellent.
The final option for ESL teachers looking to find TEFL jobs in Switzerland are hotel schools.Due to the requirement to speak excellent English in the hospitality industry, students who do not have the required level are often offered extra classes before their enrollment or in addition to their training. These are usually the best-paid opportunities, with fixed working hours of around 20–25 teaching hours per week, contracts and more security than other options.
Teaching English in Switzerland can net ESL teachers salaries ranging from £700 per month in language institutes to over £2000 in hotel schools. The cost of living in Switzerland is high so only those on the highest wages are likely to be able to save money in addition to paying everyday expenses.
