English teaching jobs in Spain

Whilst Spain is often regarded as a land of fiestas, siestas and paella, there is a huge amount more to the country than is touted in tourist brochures, and TEFL jobs in Spain are relatively easy to come by.With 17 autonomous regions, each with its own unique culture, traditions, food and even languages, it would take years to experience all that is on offer. As such, the country makes a perfect base for ESL/EFL teachers to explore.

Home to over 46 million people, Spain features idyllic beaches, culture-rich cities and mountainous villages that appear frozen in time.An impressive range of architecture can be found throughout the country, from the MoorishAlhambra in Granada and the quirky style of Gaudi in Barcelona, to the sleek modern beauty of Bilbao’s Guggenheim.TEFL jobs in Spain can be found in a variety of locations, giving teachers the opportunity to choose an area they are interested in.

The main language spoken throughout all regions is Castellaño, however many dialects are also widely used in various parts of the country, particularly in Catalonia, the Basque Country bordering France and the western region of Galicia.English is frequently spoken in the larger cities, however in smaller towns and rural areas, ESL teachers will benefit from at least basic Spanish language skills.TEFL jobs in Spain do not usually require teachers to speak Spanish in the classroom.

There is also a marked difference in local food between regions, with the southern part of the country favouring African-influenced and Mediterranean-style dishes, compared to the heavier specialities more suited to the cooler climate of the north.Tapas-style eating is popular throughout the country, but perhaps the most renowned city for dining is the picturesque San Sebastian,as famed for its tiny streets of bars boasting counters heaving with perfectly proportioned pintxos as for its cutting-edge Michelin-starred establishments. For food lovers San Sebastian is an excellent choice for finding a TEFL job in Spain.

The recent financial crisis has hit hard in Spain, leaving a large proportion of the population unemployed, particularly young people who have just finished university. This in turn has led to a huge increase in the desire to learn English, in order to increase job prospects and open up opportunities for travel and work elsewhere in Europe. As such, ESL teachers are in high demand and TEFL jobs in Spain are generally available, teaching everyone from preschoolers to corporate business English.

Private academies provide the main opportunity for TEFL jobs in Spain, although there may also be positions available in government and private schools as language assistants, particularly for U.S. citizens, who may take part in a North American Culture and Language Assistance programme.Academies generally favour native-speaking EU citizens with a university qualification, who have also done a TEFL course. There are also opportunities to work at the hugely popular ESL summer camps, held over the three-month school summer break, for those ESL teachers looking for a shorter contract orextra work when academies are closed for the summer.

ESL teachers in Spain generally teach around 26 hours per week, with extra time for lesson preparation. It is common to teach a couple of hours in the morning, followed by a long ‘siesta’ and the majority of hours in the afternoon and evening.ESL classes are often held until 9.30pm as the Spanish don’t tend to eat dinner until late.TEFL jobs in Spain can offer variable salaries, however an average wage could range from the equivalent of £500 to £900 per month. As rent and food is reasonably cheap, it is possible to live comfortably on this salary, however many ESL teachers choose to supplement their income doing private tutoring, which can command a higher fee.
