The huge capital of Seoul is home to over 25 million people and offers endless entertainment in the form of shopping, dining, cultural shows, and sporting events. A visit to the country’s islands is also not to be missed, with a trip to Dokdo and Ulleung-do offering the opportunity to observe the spectacular first sunrise, as well as beautiful flora and beaches.
Korean cuisine is well worth a trip to the country in itself, with popular dishes such as bulgogi, bibimbap, and kimchi gaining worldwide popularity. Education is very important to Koreans and many students go to ‘hagwons’, academies offering extra tuition in a range of subjects after school. These provide ESL teachers with many opportunities to instruct not only children and students but also business people. For more experienced EFL/ESL teachers, jobs are also available in public schools and for those with formal teaching qualifications in addition to TEFL, international schools and universities also offer an excellent source of TEFL jobs in South Korea.
Working hours will vary depending on the type of school, however, an average of six ESL teaching hours a day is normal. Teachers working in hagwons are likely to be expected to work evenings after normal school and work hours.
In general, teaching English in South Korea is a well-paid occupation, although salaries can vary greatly with experience. Many TEFL jobs in South Korea will also offer return airfares, a bonus on completion of your contract, health insurance, and accommodation assistance in addition to a good salary, so it is quite feasible to save money.
