While roaming around Argentina or teaching in a small school in Bali can sound undoubtedly appealing, there has been a recent surge in online class enrolments and thus an increased demand for Online TEFL teachers. This is fantastic news given the current travel restrictions, and for anyone who doesn’t fancy uprooting their life and moving continents to pursue their dream career as an English teacher!
A must-read: Our Guide to Teaching English Online
What is truly amazing about an Online TEFL career, is you still have the flexibility to travel and visit those picturesque places you once dreamt of! Online teaching means that you could be teaching students from China, while you sit in your box bedroom in Brighton, or from your exquisite townhouse in Thailand – it really makes no difference as long as you log on for each of your classes on time! You can plan your day around your lesson timetable and choose how many classes you sign up to teach each day – so you’ve plenty of time to fit in some exploring or to curl up with Netflix and a cuppa.
You can certainly earn a sizeable salary working as an online TEFL teacher and while many start out by using online teaching as a “side hustle”, the majority actually go on to quit their 9-5s and pursue this as their sole source of income. In some cases, a higher level of income can be earned when you’re physically teaching in a classroom, but if you think about the extortionate amount you save on daily commutes in and out of work, buying lunches, lesson materials, and so on, the slight dip in salary is definitely compensated! And of course, there’s the perk that in the cooler months, you avoid frizzy rain hair, soggy sandwiches and you can have your fluffy pyjama bottoms on and no one will ever know (please look presentable from the waist up though…we beg you). Like many jobs, salaries vary depending on the company, the region, and your experience. There can be an overwhelming amount of information online, so The TEFL Academy created a Factbook comparing hundreds of schools, companies, locations, salaries, and even crime rates (in case you do decide to visit the area)!
When you decide to become an online TEFL teacher, the first step you must take is to get qualified. In the past, native English speakers could get away with not having a TEFL qualification – but nowadays, competition is rife, so let’s not take any shortcuts! We’d also like to stress the importance of getting qualified with a regulated and accredited provider. Avoid the discounted courses advertised on online coupon sites, and take an accredited Level 5 TEFL course of 168-hour duration minimum. All of our level 5 courses include a free top-up course to put you in the best position to teach your first class. A Bachelor’s degree can often be a requirement for some companies, especially in China, so be sure to check before applying! You want to choose a course provider that will support you along your TEFL journey, provide credible resources, and ultimately catalyses you into bagging your dream job.
Once you’re qualified, there are a few different paths you could take to begin your career as an online TEFL teacher. On successful completion of our Level 5 course, not only will you be qualified to teach English online, but you’ll also be awarded a certificate to teach in-class too (just in case this appeals to you down the line)! To secure your first job, you may opt to join a language company or to freelance and source your own students. Working with language companies or agencies can give you a greater sense of security as it’s easier to get booked for lessons and the work is guaranteed. Your salary will be paid weekly or monthly as opposed to receiving payment directly through PayPal before each class like a Freelancer would. Freelancing means you can ultimately choose how much or how little you work when you work and set your desired hourly rate. Whatever option you choose, the freedom you have becoming your own boss is unmatched and it’s an inspiring and rewarding industry to be a part of.
Now is the perfect time to immerse yourself in new cultures, to try new things, and to learn a new skill. Why not dedicate your time to enriching the lives of English learners around the world by taking up an online TEFL job!
