English teaching jobs in Italy
There is little doubt that Italy is one of the top destinations for English teachers from both home and abroad. Fortunately, there is currently an abundance of TEFL job in Italy, with a range of different positions in this popular, scenic and culturally appealing country.
A previous lack of ESL teachers has seen the country fall behind in terms of English learning when compared to its northern neighbours Switzerland and Austria. Recent government reforms, however, have now seen the subject pushed to the forefront of the education agenda. With these changes in mind, there is certainly enough work to keep teaching salaries at a competitive rate and working hours at a pace which will leave teachers more than enough time to enjoy the culture, cuisine and climate.
Of course, each position will vary, though in general academies require teachers who are willing to work both on site and also within local schools, where they will act as teaching assistants with an emphasis on oral preparation.
Within the academies, ESL teachers may be expected to teach a plethora of ages and levels, from young learners studying for their Trinity exams, to pre-university students hoping to gain their IELTS, FCE or CAE certificates. With pressures on students to gain these qualifications should they wish to enter certain universities, teachers should certainly seek to familiarise themselves with such exams, and expect motivated students working towards important goals.
As well as such courses there are also general English classes attended by students with a more relaxed interest in the language and the benefits it provides. The Italian sense of humour, love of conversation and light-hearted mentality can make these classes a pleasure to teach, while the differences between the two languages still offer a challenging and rewarding working environment.
