India Job Listings
There is a surprising lack of relevant and reliable information regarding TEFL jobs in India. This is in part due to the common use of English as a lingua franca, which has meant there has never been a strong demand for ESL teachers in this one-time Commonwealth nation. Also, the sheer vastness of India means that there are few consistent facts to be found in relation to ESL positions.
This does not however mean that there are no TEFL jobs in India, only that the vastness of the country is not in proportion to the demand for ESL teachers.
Private academies or international schools are nominally found in the larger cities such as Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. Here, with increased amounts of funds available, there are certainly positions to be filled by teachers holding a TEFL qualification. Requirements vary, though they are usually more relaxed than other Asian nations. A degree is certainly not an essential requirement for all roles, yet it may improve your chances. If you have completed a course of 120 hours or more, this should be sufficient. Those with an interest in teaching business, or those who have studied the teaching of large classes may also find these skills an added incentive to an employer.
Such private academies will offer a salary, which though appearing very low by European standards, can leave you free to find adequate accommodation and live comfortably within this unique, vibrant and eye-opening location. You may not have the chance to save large amounts of money, but you will certainly find that you can afford to travel to some of the many popular tourist destinations and truly experience Indian culture at its heart.
Due to the size of the country, it is essential that you thoroughly research where exactly you feel would be the best location for you. Urban areas such as the above-mentioned cities will offer the most possibilities for paid work, however you may also find voluntary positions with reputable organisations in a variety of rural locations which may allow you to experience an entirely different side to this impressively diverse country.
It should be noted that India’s education system is in many ways below standard in comparison to Europe’s and even those found in other parts of Asia. This may mean working with large classes or working with very little in the way of resources. For some EFL teachers this may prove too demanding, while for others it could be the perfect opportunity to put their TEFL qualification to good use and hone the skills they have learnt.
Employment visas can be obtained with relative ease, though it is very unlikely that your school or academy will assist with the cost of your flight.
In short, TEFL jobs in India are there for those who have the enthusiasm to find them. It is also that same enthusiasm which could make teaching ESL in India the adventure of a lifetime.

This means when you graduate you’ll hold a globally recognised Level 3 (120hr) Certificate or Level 5 (168hr) Diploma, meaning you can find work anywhere and apply for jobs immediately.
