How to begin teaching in Bhutan
Can you imagine a country which bases its success on happiness rather than economic indicators? Bhutan is that country. A simple, peaceful country nestled between India and China, Bhutan has Gross National Happiness as its central governing principle, meaning that more emphasis is placed on happiness than economic prosperity.
Virtually untouched by the modern world, Bhutan has many natural sights to offer, with very little pollution and very few tourists. In fact, it costs tourists $250 a day for a visa to visit the country, so it’s not surprising that not many people are willing to pay the price and cross the border.
Bhutan is a country of dramatic landscapes. Magnificent monasteries hug the edges of cliffs, beautiful palaces line riverbanks and breath-taking hikes will give you extraordinary views of mountain ranges and valleys.
Teaching opportunities in Bhutan
There has been a recent movement to educate the population in Bhutan with new schools being developed and a national plan of educational reform being put forward. For this reason, there are English teaching positions available in Bhutan, though not as many as in neighbouring countries.
You could find a position in a government school, a monastic school or an adult literacy school. Some of these are paid positions but the majority are volunteer positions. It is necessary to get a job offer before arrival in the country in order to get the appropriate visa and avoid paying the exorbitant tourist visa fee.
Teaching requirements
Teaching English in Bhutan can be a fulfilling and rewarding experience. While a BA/BS/BEd degree is preferred, it is not necessarily required. Typical contract lengths for teaching positions are 12 months and the peak hiring seasons are in December, January, and May/June.
To work in Bhutan as an English teacher, you will need to obtain a work visa. English teachers in Bhutan can expect to teach a variety of students, including children, adults, and monks.
The average monthly cost of living in Bhutan ranges from 15,000-25,000 BTN ($180 – $300), while the average monthly salary for English teachers is between 28,975-37,727 BTN ($350 – $450). Overall, teaching English in Bhutan can be a unique and enriching experience for those who are passionate about education and cultural exchange.
