Life Must Go On, Even During Covid-19: The Boundless Possibilities of Online Teaching
Hey everyone! My name is Lorraine and I am a 24 year-old freelance teacher (both online and offline!) and theatre performer from Hong Kong.
Let’s face it: at the beginning of 2020, none of us expected that in a few months, we would all be swept into a pandemic. In March, I found myself living alone in the Netherlands as a university exchange student, far away from my family and friends. All I had was my online university studies, and of course, my TEFL course waiting for me to complete. As a university student who was due to graduate in summer, little did I expect that the TEFL course I signed up for a few months ago, out of curiosity and an ongoing passion for teaching, would turn out to be the golden opportunity for me to land my first professional online teaching job right after graduation! Not only does teaching online allow me to work wherever I go, but I get to also continue exploring this new chapter of my life after university.
With a Level 5 TEFL Qualification course, the knowledge and experience that I gained as an aspiring language teacher were totally out of my expectations. Especially through working on my TEFL assignments, I learned how to create lesson plans that are tailormade for the needs of students, regardless of their language levels. Without a doubt, all the professional tips that I learned from the TEFL course are so tremendously useful and practical that whenever I create lesson plans for my current online classes, I still use the guidelines of TEFL assignments as a reference.
“I am very grateful to have chosen The TEFL Academy as the place for me to jump-start my online teaching career as a freelance English teacher.”
Since July, I have been teaching online English speaking classes via the virtual classroom of the up-and-coming Hong Kong education website called Key Educations Leaders (KEL). Not long after I added my latest credentials of attaining a Level 5 TEFL qualification to my online resume on LinkedIn, I was invited to join the KEL community to design and teach online classes for students in Hong Kong. With the chance to teach English online, even when I’m currently living overseas in Germany, I poured my heart out and created a course titled “Expressing Yourself in English with Confidence”, which I, as well as my students, are really happy with.
Without the knowledge that I gained from the TEFL course; I would not be as confident and comfortable as I am now at teaching English online as a fresh university graduate. Though prior to studying with The TEFL Academy, I was already teaching English and English Drama at primary schools, after attaining my Level 5 TEFL qualification, I feel more well-equipped than ever to continue my journey as a freelance language teacher. Not to mention, the course really reaffirmed my passion for teaching English as a second language.
For now, as the world continues to navigate life under the shadow of Covid-19, I am very grateful to have chosen The TEFL Academy as the place for me to jump-start my online teaching career as a freelance English teacher.
