You can enrol on any of the following TEFL courses: Online Level 3 TEFL Certificate, Online Level 5 TEFL Diploma or Combined Level 5 TEFL Diploma, depending on how you intend to use your TEFL qualification. So, which option from our TEFL courses is right for you?
Our Level 3 TEFL certificate course will introduce you to TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language). It is an online-only course and leads to a 120hr TEFL certificate. It is the best option if you want to find casual work teaching English, such as volunteer teaching, teaching whilst backpacking, plus some online roles.
Our Level 5 TEFL diploma course goes into more detail. It can be studied online or online with classroom learning (combined) and leads to a 168hr TEFL diploma. Our classroom learning is delivered face-to-face at one of our Australian Campuses. A Level 5 TEFL course is the best option if you want to find formal work teaching English, such as the contracted roles from our TEFL Jobs Board, or government teaching programmes, which usually include accommodation, flight reimbursement and help to get your work visa.

TEFL Course FAQ
Australia is a popular destination for English language learners and TEFL teachers alike - and who can blame them? But this means there are heaps of TEFL courses on offer. Here’s why we think you should choose The TEFL Academy:
- Our courses are accredited by recognised awarding bodies.
- We have the highest average review ratings of any TEFL course provider on all the major review aggregator sites.
- We have won the Go Overseas and Go Abroad Top TEFL Course Awards in 2019, 2020 and 2021!
- Our team of dedicated tutors are qualified and experienced TEFL teachers.
EFL employers prefer TEFL teachers with a TEFL qualification of at least 120 hours. In other words, we don’t recommend doing a TEFL course shorter than that. Our Level 3 TEFL course is 120 hours. It will prepare you to teach English as a foreign language in any classroom situation. It is best suited for TEFL teachers who want to volunteer teach or teach in short-term positions. You can also do our combined Level 5 TEFL course, or an online-only Level 5 TEFL, which are both 168 hours. This course is more in-depth and gives you access to long-term, more formal, and better-paid teaching positions.
Yep. As long as your TEFL course is at least 120 hours, your qualification will be recognised in Australia and anywhere else. The TEFL Academy qualifications are internationally recognised and accredited. EFL employers all over the world are familiar with The TEFL Academy qualifications and welcome our graduates with open arms.
Yes and no. If you have been out of the classroom for a while or if you’re not academically inclined, you may find a TEFL course to be hard work. A TEFL course involves extensive reading, assignments and tests. It is an in-depth course which is necessary to prepare you to teach, especially if you have no teaching experience (which is most of us new teachers). When you do a TEFL course from The TEFL Academy, you will be supported by qualified and experienced tutors who are just a click away. You will join a community of other students on the course where you can chat about everything from IPA to PPP. Are TEFL courses hard? They’re challenging, for good reason, but they’re totally do-able.
Yes! The TEFL Academy offers a Level 3 120-hour online TEFL course and a Level 5 168-hour online TEFL course. If you are already TEFL-qualified, you can sign up for one of The TEFL Academy’s online 30-hour Top-Up Courses - Teaching Business English, Teaching Young Learners, or Teaching Online & 1:1.
Our Level 5 168-hour combined TEFL course involves both online learning and face-to-face instruction. In Australia, we offer the 10-hour practical component of the course in Sydney and Melbourne. This component solidifies your learning on the course and gives you an opportunity to put your teaching knowledge into practice.
Practically anywhere. A reputable TEFL certification allows you to teach in the majority of countries around the world - both English-speaking and not.In other words, you can teach in Thailand, Argentina and Turkey, but also Australia, the UK, and South Africa. With a TEFL certification you can also teach online. You don’t need a degree to be able to teach English as a foreign language, but you do need a TEFL qualification from an internationally recognised and accredited TEFL course provider.
A TEFL course from The TEFL Academy costs between $500 and $1300. TEFL courses in general vary wildly in price, but considering it’s a teaching qualification, we strongly feel this isn’t something you should skimp on. Remember: you get what you pay for!
EFL employers ask for 120 hours as a minimum for a TEFL qualification. A Level 3 course is sufficient as long as it offers 120 hours. If you are looking for a short-term teaching opportunity such as volunteering or working on a summer camp, a Level 3 suits your needs. However, if you would like more teaching opportunities to be available to you, especially long-term, formal jobs, a combined Level 5 TEFL, or an online-only Level 5 TEFL course is the better option. A Level 5 TEFL course is more of an investment in your future.
The TEFL Academy is an internationally recognised and accredited TEFL course provider. Our courses are recognised by accrediting bodies in both the UK and the US. We are proud of our accreditation - read more about it on our accreditation page. The simplest way to check if a TEFL course is legitimate is to ask the graduates themselves. Check out reviews online and find out what the alumni are doing after graduation. We have loads of happy students who have completed one of our courses over the last decade. In fact, over 200,000 TEFL Academy graduates have found jobs all over the world and online!
“It turns out this was one of the best decisions I have ever made. My only regret is not doing it sooner!”
