The coronavirus pandemic may have brought remote work to the attention of the wider world, but it’s been a popular option for some occupations for a number of years.

Remote positions are not new but these days remote working is a movement. Initially many believed that remote workers would work from bed all day, not having to worry about showering or small talk around the water cooler.

And yes, remote work and working from home was certainly abused by a few.

But remote work employment is now so popular because it can work. It’s convenient and flexible. It can save us money in travel costs and workwear. It gives us more freedom to focus on our lives outside our jobs. And many of us are more efficient and productive when working in our own space and our own time.

But what exactly is remote working?

What is remote work?

You’re probably heard of the terms remote work and remote job but do you know exactly what they mean? What does remote work mean and what is a remote job?

The meaning of remote work is basically a job you can do outside a traditional office space. Working remotely means working from your laptop. In other words, remote workers of a company work from different locations – though sometimes it might be required to work in the same city, state or country.

So, what is a remote worker? Essentially, a remote worker needs is someone who only requires a stable internet connection to fulfil their job expectations.

What is a remote job? Well, there are many answers to that question.

Remote jobs can be full-time or part-time, casual/temporary or permanent, freelance or employed. Remote jobs may require you to work standard office hours, certain specified hours a day, or a certain number of hours a day/week at any time of your convenience.

As you can imagine, a number of jobs can fit into a flexible schedule like remote work offers.

Types of remote working

There are a few different levels of remote working: fully remote, option for remote, and hybrid remote.

Fully remote

Fully remote jobs are jobs which are 100% remote. You can do your job entirely remotely. There is no time you are needed to be in a physical office.

This type of remote work is location-independent, so you can work from home, your mom’s home, a co-working space, or a coffee shop.

Option for remote

Option for remote work allows the worker to work from home or work in the office, or do a combination of both.

This is becoming increasingly popular about remote workers who enjoy the freedom of being able to work from home, but also want to experience working from an office at times.

Hybrid remote

Hybrid remote work require some work time to be spent in a physical office.

If you are an employed remote worker, you are still eligible for company benefits. If you are a freelance remote worker you won’t be.
