Teach English in Togo

Togo is a thin strip of a country on the west Coast of Africa. With tranquil beaches, vibrant markets and friendly people, it was once considered the pearl of West Africa. For such a small country, Togo has a surprising number of attractions.

The capital of Lomè has both pristine beaches and a thumping nightlife, to the east are colonial towns with their chaotic and colourful markets, inland villages can be found hidden in the forests of the cocoa triangle while in the north, traditional villages showcase the laidback lifestyle of rural Africa.

Living in Togo is not for the faint-hearted, though. There is very little infrastructure, unreliable public transport and many places don’t have electricity or running water so while living in Togo may be challenging, it’ll definitely be rewarding.

French is the official language in Togo, but over 40 other languages are spoken.  The national languages are Ewé and Kabiyé. French is the mandatory language in school. However,  the Togolese people typically speak their native African language.

The Lomè Grand Market buzzes with lots of spirit and cultural displays.You can often see live African music and artistic performances by the locals. At the market you can find local and international products for everyday life – from food to clothing and souvenirs to voodoo fetishes.

Togolese meals typically include staple foods such as platain, beans, yam, millet, and rice. Make sure to sample some traditional fufu – boiled yams and cassava mashed into a soft paste and served with soup or sauces.
