How to begin teaching in Algeria

The largest country in Africa, Algeria is a country of UNESCO heritage sites, beautiful colonial architecture, ancient Roman ruins, gorgeous beaches and the Sahara Desert. The sheer size of the country means that there are various geographical regions in the country, from the coast to the mountains to the desert.

There are a range of activities that can be done to suit every traveller’s tastes: spend time in the capital city of Algiers, a quaint town with a touch of French colonialism; or visit the city of Ouargla in the south of the desert, an ochre-coloured town known as ‘the golden key to the desert.’ You can also hike around the vast volcanic plateau of Tassili n’Ajjer; soak up the sun on the Turquoise Coast; tour the Sahara by camel; or visit the historic and holy town of Beni-Isguen.

Teaching opportunities

There are teaching opportunities in Algeria, but salaries are quite low and resources minimal. There are positions in state schools, language centres, universities and international schools, with state schools offering the lowest salaries and international schools the highest. There are also a growing number of in-company language training positions aimed at the employees of various foreign companies. You need a degree for any paid positions and the higher your level of education, the better your salary will be.

A work visa must be organised before arrival in the country and you will need your employer to help you apply for employment authorisation issued by the Algerian Ministry of Labour.

Teaching requirements in Algeria

Teaching English in Algeria does not require a degree, and contracts typically last from six to twelve months with peak hiring seasons throughout the year. Tourist visas can be converted to work visas for obtaining a visa, and students typically range from business professionals to children.

The average monthly cost of living in Algeria ranges from DA46,164 to DA61,526, while the average monthly salary ranges from DA38,453 to DA76,907 in local currency. With these factors in mind, teaching English in Algeria can be a great opportunity for those looking to immerse themselves in North African culture while teaching English and gaining valuable international teaching experience.
