    Job Description 2023

    As a teacher with the Centre of English Studies, your job description will be as outlined below.  The duties listed below will however not necessarily be limited to this list and this list cannot be considered to be exhaustive.

    Academic

    • Planning and teaching 15 hours of morning classes (09.30 – 13.00 Monday to Friday) as allocated to you by the Principal/Academic Director. These may be at any level and at any CES location in Leeds.  They may be adults or juniors.  We will of course make every effort to ensure that you are allocated classes in accordance with your preferences, but this may not always be possible.

    • Writing full and comprehensive reports for your main class (the class which you teach first every morning) and any other interim reports when asked to do so by the Principal/Academic Director

    • Advising the Principal/Academic Director of any students who have been misplaced in their level or who need to move up or to move down a level

    • Completing accurate and detailed weekly schemes of work in accordance with the CES Curriculum and Syllabus document and in conjunction with your class co-teacher

    • Any other reasonable duties or tasks as deemed necessary by the Principal/Academic Director


    Administrative

    • Maintaining your work areas in an orderly fashion, filing (in accordance with the cataloguing system) in the proper place any supplementary materials that are not being used.

    • Maintaining accurate attendance registers. Informing the Director of Studies of absences by the morning break.

    • Ensuring that End of the First Week and End of Course questionnaires are completed online

    • Ensuring that lessons are fully and professionally prepared.


    Coordination and Supervision in Residence

    Work closely with group leaders, CES Staff, residential staff and students to achieve the following

    • Ensure adequate supervision of junior students in the residence in the evenings.

    • Ensure safeguarding and health and safety procedures are adhered to

    • Ensure rules and guidelines laid down by the university are adhered to

    • To be solicitous of student welfare and wellbeing

    • Ensure meal times, daily shuttle bus departures and arrivals and curfews are adhered to

    • Facilitate group arrival and departures in the residence

    • Organise evening and weekend social activities

    • Participate in evening and weekend social activities on occasions when required

    • Regularly liaise with group leaders, CES staff and university residential staff on all matters arising in the supervision and safeguarding of students

    • Seek to resolve mutual issues arising. Report issues to the principal when necessary.


    Safe-guarding

    Centre of English Studies places the highest importance on providing a safe and secure environment for all of our students and staff, but especially for young learners and juniors. Our recruitment processes and procedures will reflect this ongoing commitment by making every reasonable effort to ensure that we employ appropriate, highly qualified members of staff who understand and share this commitment.

    All staff may at some point have contact with students under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of every member of staff to:

    • be familiar with CES policies (including the CES Safe-Guarding Policy) regarding the care of under-18s, and report any potential safeguarding issues as soon as they occur with this age group to the Principal or DSP.

    • actively monitor student welfare, paying particular attention to the care of under-18s in your classes, and reporting any areas of concern to the Principal or DSP immediately.

    • be aware of and implement the school’s policy on bullying and abusive behaviour, monitoring and reporting on issues to the Principal or DSP should they occur.


    Policies and procedures

    • All members of staff must read the policies and procedures as detailed in the Employee Handbook and the school Policies and Procedures folder, copies of which are kept in each office. Staff must sign that they have read all policies and procedures on the form provided at the front of the folder.


    The employee will be expected to work in the best interests of the School at all times, to be punctual in arriving at the School for work and to treat as confidential all information relating to the School, its agents, its students and the families who host the School’s students.
