Peru Job Listings
For those hoping to experience EFL teaching within a vibrant, diverse and culturally rich environment, TEFL jobs in Peru offer a great opportunity. Fortunately, there is currently a high demand for ESL teachers within Peru, meaning that there are teaching positions available for all interested.
The country’s strong and growing tourism sector has seen a constant increase in the need for ESL teachers. Lima, the capital city, and other large cities such as Cuzco have become destination hot spots for backpackers, adventure holiday enthusiasts and tourists. This increased interest has meant that young professionals and businesses have prioritised the importance of English in this now much more stable country.
TEFL jobs in Peru may therefore be found in differing environments. Public schools and voluntary organisations are always keen to hire ESL teachers, very often not requiring candidates to have obtained a degree, but preferring some type of EFL qualification. Work in public schools may either be as a teaching assistant, aiding the primary teacher in oral exercises or written work, or as the sole teacher subbing certain classes. Such positions are usually only part time. You may therefore be required to take on several jobs if you aim to reach a high number of contracted hours.
Volunteer roles, on the other hand, may offer accommodation only, though reputable companies will also assist you in obtaining the correct visa and documents. These roles can be challenging and highly rewarding, often working with large classes of enthusiastic and well-humoured students.
For the more highly qualified ESL teacher there are some private academies and language schools to be found, again nominally in Lima and the other large cities. Though these jobs may not initially offer many contract hours, networking may allow you to find more secure work once you have found the right school. It should be noted, however, that without an intermediary it is difficult to find work from abroad. Some therefore choose to enter the country on a tourist visa before finding a suitable position and changing their visa to work status. If doing this, it is advisable to budget for at least six weeks as it may take time to find a position. Peak hiring times in Peru are in February and March, though it is also worth looking in July and August too.
Other TEFL jobs in Peru may be found in local businesses and international companies. Finding positions may again be difficult from abroad. However, once in the country, networking with other ESL teachers may open opportunities to work in comfortable professional environments for those interested in or with experience of business English.
With low living costs, Peru can offer a reasonable standard of living for ESL teachers able to find suitable contract hours, though it may prove difficult to save. For those who are more interested in the chance to teach in an exotic and culturally rich environment than in the salary provided, TEFL jobs in Peru can certainly offer a great opportunity.
