Hungary Job Listings
Despite Hungary having joined the European Union in 2004, and despite the definite and increased interest in the multinational uses of English which the country has shown, TEFL jobs in Hungary are still not the easiest to find.
Playing a prominent role in bridging the gap between Western and Eastern Europe, the country is increasingly utilising English in the workplace. Consequently, Hungarian youth are being influenced to adopt the language, meaning a greater demand for ESL teachers.
Unfortunately, though demand has risen, so have the requirements needed to secure TEFL jobs in Hungary. The country has strict policies regarding educational employment. Only ESL teachers with a degree and a strong TEFL qualification are guaranteed to find work in this most historic and architecturally bountiful of nations. Even with these credentials work may only be on a part-time basis, therefore not fulfilling salary needs.
For those lucky enough to find full-time work, you can expect to be teaching for around 20–25 hours a week. Your salary may not seem high when compared to other destinations, but low living costs will mean that you will be able to live more than comfortably. Most jobs are to be found within reputable, well-run and adequately resourced academies, the majority of which can be found in Budapest, Debrecen, Miskolc or Szolnock.
To apply for such full-time jobs without the help of an intermediary is difficult. ESL positions are not often advertised, meaning that you would have to attempt to contact prospective schools directly, many of which will not offer a place without either a Skype or face-to-face interview. One possible way around this is to look for ESL positions within Hungarian summer camps. Such camps are often easier to find, meaning that you can network with potential schools whilst in the country and earning. Looking online in April or May you should be able to easily come across such roles.
In spite of these initial difficulties, if you are in possession of the correct qualifications and able to find an available position which can offer you adequate teaching hours, TEFL jobs in Hungary can be highly satisfying. The country on the whole is increasingly keen to advance its level of English, meaning motivated and enthusiastic students. The need for business English also offers a unique experience for ESL teachers wishing to broaden their skill set and work with adults as well as younger learners.
For those contemplating the possibility of teaching privately in Hungary, this may be a way of supplementing a part-time wage. It should not be considered a full-time solution, however, unless you are prepared to legally apply for a self-employment licence. Though not impossible to do, this may require time, so you should plan ahead and ensure you have accommodation and a sufficient budget.
