With a fantastic location offering an exciting blend of European and Asian culture, amazing weather and easy access to surrounding countries, TEFL jobs in Turkey appeal to many ESL teachers.
Fortunately, the appeal of an EFL position in Turkey is equal to the demand for teachers. The country is very enthusiastic to learn a language which is important for its tourism industry as well as for creating international ties to other nations. There has in recent years been an obvious increase in demand for ESL teachers as a consequence of a much higher number of language academies. Teachers are therefore warmly welcomed in this multicultural country which is trying its best to move past some of the troubles which it has previously suffered.
ESL positions can be found in all parts of the country, though they are especially abundant in the larger cities of Ankara, Izmir, Bursa and of course the scenic hot spot of Istanbul. With typical working weeks of 20 to 25 hours, these academies will allow you to earn modest but sufficient salaries in keeping with local living costs. The materials, methods and resources used in such academies are usually relatively modern. The only point which a prospective candidate should be careful about is that the reputations of these academies may vary, with some offering high standards of professionalism which others lack. It is always worth searching TEFL sites to find positive or negative reviews about schools or academies. The TEFL blacklist may be useful to help you avoid a negative teaching experience.
Once you have found a reputable school, you may be accepted with or without a degree, though a strong TEFL certificate is certainly going to improve your chances of gaining employment and negotiating a higher salary. Courses teaching young learners, children and adults interested in business English are popular, so it is worth mentioning any experience which you possess in these fields. There are, however, many general English courses, so ESL teachers with little or no experience may find TEFL jobs in Turkey to be a great first step in their TEFL career.
A visa is required to work in Turkey. Reputable and well-run schools may assist or advise you on how to best go about achieving this, while intermediary websites may again make the red tape much easier to cut through. Jobs can be found online all year round, though it should be noted that some schools and academies prefer to hire teachers who have already lived and worked in the country. This should not deter you from applying, though, as the country is always in need of new blood keen to get to grips with the subtleties of the Turkish TEFL experience.
Popular with young ESL teachers, larger Turkish cities like Istanbul can offer a vibrant and social teaching environment. There is, however, something for everyone in this historically rich and culturally impressive nation. TEFL jobs in Turkey offer a fantastic opportunity for adventurous ESL teachers.
