Zambia Job Listings
The Southern African country of Zambia is the perfect destination for ESL teachers seeking adventure and is ideal for nature lovers, hosting a wide variety of flora and fauna, as well as the world-renowned Victoria Falls.
TEFL jobs in Zambia are most commonly found in the capital of Lusaka, one of the fastest-developing cities in Southern Africa. Although lacking in more traditional tourist attractions and sites, the city is an excellent gateway for exploring further afield and does have a good selection of expat bars and luxury hotels. Although not the most attractive of cities, Lusaka does have a uniquely African feel with its dusty roads and marketplaces.
ESL teachers accepting TEFL jobs in Zambia will have the opportunity to gain a unique insight into a country with a rich cultural heritage, with the traditional practices and beliefs of many different and separate cultural tribes still clearly visible in rural areas.
Teaching Opportunities in Zambia
As a former British colony, English is the official language of Zambia. However, due to the fact that many children speak a different language at home and only learn English as a second language when starting school, TEFL jobs in Zambia are still fairly easy to come by. The high level of poverty in the country does mean, however, that these are often volunteer positions.
For those ESL teachers with a TEFL certificate but no formal teaching qualifications, the most likely way of finding TEFL jobs in Zambia is through a volunteer organisation. Although unpaid, these positions often provide basic accommodation in addition to support, transport and a placement in a local school. As these positions are frequently based in more rural areas, they can provide ESL teachers with a unique opportunity to experience the diversity of the country at first hand and are a great way to gain experience as a TEFL teacher.
Taking volunteer TEFL jobs in Zambia will usually mean an early start, with classes beginning as early as 7 am and often taught under the trees outside. Often, due to large class sizes, the day is split in two, with one group attending in the morning and another in the afternoon. Students are lucky to get one meal per day and are often expected to do chores both before and after school, however most are keen to learn and TEFL jobs in Zambia can be incredibly rewarding for the ESL teacher.
Paid TEFL jobs in Zambia may be available for those ESL teachers with a formal teaching qualification in their home country. These positions are generally in international schools and are based in the larger cities. Teachers accepting this type of job can also usually expect a generous salary of around £1000 to £1700 per month, often paid in their own currency, in addition to paid airfares, free accommodation and health insurance. Although the cost of living in Zambia is high by African standards, it is very low when compared to Western countries. It should be noted, however, that imported goods, foods and luxury items can be very expensive, but if ESL teachers are happy to adopt a simpler lifestyle, paid TEFL jobs in Zambia can be very lucrative.
