Argentina Job Listings
The birthplace of the tango, Argentina is a country with a fiery passion flowing through its veins, but which can also offer a tranquil escape into the wonders of nature. As a TEFL teacher you will find this Latin passion a positive thing, with the lively and social nature of the students helping to make it a fun-packed experience, as well as keeping you on your toes.
If you like good food, then there is plenty to keep you happy while you are here. Meat lovers are well catered for, with Argentinean steak recognised worldwide for its quality, and for a very good reason. The “Parrillada” is the Argentinean barbeque and one of the best ways to enjoy the national food. Dine in a restaurant with a fine bottle of wine, or pick up “costillas” (ribs) or a steak sandwich from a street vendor. Another night, experience Argentinean pizza, regarded by locals as better than what is on offer in even Italy and the US. Known for being a land of great contrasts, it can make for a variety of unforgettable experiences when you enjoy some well-earned time off from your TEFL job.
Get an insight into the power of nature by witnessing the thunderous Iguazú Falls; or literally have your breath taken away by climbing the highest peaks of the Andes. Sizzle like a steak when you walk through the Patagonian Desert; next, turn yourself into an ice cube visiting the Glaciar Perito Moreno. The chance to create another wonderful and varied experience to add to your memory bank is never far away. Perhaps one Saturday you will dance until sunrise at a Buenos Aires tango club, or you could choose to witness an unforgettable sunset while drinking Argentinean wine in the foothills of the Andes around Mendoza. Another day you could head out and relax playing a round of golf at one of the growing numbers of world-class golf courses, or instead, decide to get swept up in the emotion of watching an Argentinean football game from the stands.
Argentina is often seen as a place for short-term employment for EFL teachers as they look to enjoy South America and brush up on their Spanish. Argentinean public schools don’t allow foreigners to teach there, so most jobs are with private language centres or at bilingual schools. Teacher turnover tends to be high for this reason, and employers can often be extremely demanding, expecting you to drop everything at a moment’s notice and travel far and wide out of your own pocket.
Plenty of TEFL jobs exist in Argentina, however, with many of its people wanting to learn English. Good employers and well-paid positions can be found by those willing to search and work hard; generally, however, the wages offered to EFL teachers are not especially high, and when combined with a higher cost of living than many comparable countries, this can mean saving money isn’t an option. Picking up a few private students is a great way to supplement your income during your time here.
